CLAW Film Screening in the Park

When the concert series in Lee Park concludes on Saturday, Charlottesville’s Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLAW) takes the stage for a special screening of the documentary about the birth and growth of the league.

Presented by the Virginia Film Festival

Pregnant brides, Virgin Madonnas, and the occasional giant banana: all part of arm wrestling to raise money for charity. Started in Charlottesville, VA, The Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLAW), is spreading coast to coast, with sister branches in Austin, Brooklyn, New Orleans, DC, and even Sao Paolo, Brazil. In this modern vaudeville, CLAW skirts the edges of entertainment, delving into social critique of contemporary women’s empowerment. Beyond the bustiers and burqas, is it the fourth wave of feminism or the latest form of burlesque?

The Virginia Film Festival brings you a  special screening of CLAW on Saturday night in Lee Park. Bring a blanket, stretch out in the grass, and enjoy the food truck rally and craft beer garden. The ladies of CLAW will join the festivities and bring the action from the screen to life with all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect. The event wraps up with a parade down the Downtown Mall led by Elby Brass Band.

2013. USA. 86 min. Directors: Brian Wimer, Billy Hunt.
