Lawrence D. “Larry” Wilder, Jr. is Advisor to the Secretary of Commerce and Trade on Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In this capacity, Larry focuses on engaging the social sector – individuals, non-profits, foundations – as well as business and government – to find new ways to solve old problems and drive collaboration to make greater and more lasting progress in meeting the challenges our Commonwealth faces.
Previously, Larry served as Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office of Governor Bob McDonnell focusing on issues of charter schools, college laboratory schools, and financial literacy. Prior to that role, he was a Special Assistant for Reentry Education, working on the Governor’s Prisoner Reentry Initiative on issues of education, housing and workforce development.
Prior to joining the McDonnell Administration, Larry served as a consultant with Unisphere Development Strategies, which focused on creating innovative business and investment strategies that fostered economic opportunity in low-income communities.
Immediately prior to Unisphere, Larry served as Strategic Markets Director in the Los Angeles office of Urban America, an investment advisor and asset manager specializing in urban commercial and mixed-use real estate investment. Larry’s duties included developing strategic partners, forging public/private partnerships and securing project funding.
Larry began his legal career at Wilder & Gregory in Richmond, Virginia. During 14 years practicing law Larry served as counsel to state and local governmental entities. Subsequent to his law practice, Larry held a variety of finance-related positions with public and private sector entities, including the Pennsylvania State Employees’ Retirement System, Jackson Securities, and The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation. He also served as a business advisor with Pacific Community Ventures, a San Francisco-based non-profit that develops and invests in businesses in low-income communities throughout California.
Larry earned both his BA (Economics) and JD degrees from the University of Virginia and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. He also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.
