Commonwealth Restaurant & Skybar’s mixologist Matt Pawlina is a true Charlottesville native. His family tree is documented back to the 1700’s right here in Charlottesville. His grandfather Russle Gardner ran one of the first dance halls in Charlottesville in the late 1940’s called “The Tin Rin Club,” and still found time to run moonshine from Nelson County on Sundays. You could say bartending runs deep in Matt’s blood. After joining the Commonwealth family with the help of Nick Crutchfield, he was given the opportunity to learn directly from the bar greats Paul Pacult, David Wondrich, Andy Seymore, Dale Degroff, Doug Frost and Steve Olson. Matt is an active member in The United States Bartenders Guild. He as already gotten his BAC certification and is currently working on his Diageo World Class competition.
“Dean Martin said it best, ‘A bartender should have clean hands, open ears and tight lips.'”
