Born in Newton, Massachusetts, I grew up primarily in Massachusetts, with the exception of five childhood years living in Ohio and Virginia.
I first came here as a UVA undergrad, but didn’t make it my home until after law school and marrying my college sweetheart. I’ve been practicing law here since 1998, and founded Royer, Caramanis & McDonough, PLC with three other partners in 2013.
What is Charlottesville’s greatest untapped potential?
Our localities are sometimes overprotective in their efforts to preserve our beautiful community, and I believe the community can grow and be more welcoming to newcomers, particularly businesses, without losing the character of the area that we all know and love.
Connection to Tom Tom
Paul started talking with me about it when it was still a vision in his head. I loved his idea and I’m proud to have been helping both personally and professionally ever since!
Favorite Part about Tom Tom
The thing that initially hooked me to the Tom Tom vision was Paul’s desire to promote and celebrate the present and future of Charlottesville as much as its past. Being a UVA grad and Charlottesville resident, Thomas Jefferson is near to my heart, but Jefferson himself would be outraged if this region simply continued to focus on his accomplishments and its history and didn’t celebrate even more the wonderful things that continue to occur here day after day. I love that Tom Tom is putting Charlottesville back on the map as a place of music, art and innovation with an appropriate nod to its rich Jeffersonian history. As far as Tom Tom events go, I enjoy them all, but I always particularly enjoy the pitch nights, the block parties and the Founders Summit!
The most important thing in my life are my wife, Ida, and our three kids. As a family, we believe it is important to be active contributors to those causes dear us – hence, my involvement in Tom Tom. In addition, I’m the Vice-Chair of the UVA Children’s Hospital Committee and an ardent supporter of children’s health issues, particularly pediatric cancer. I have served on the Economic and Government Affairs Committee of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce and will be joining the Chamber’s Board of Directors in January 2016. I am also a 2006 graduate of Leadership Charlottesville, and a multi-term past president of the Leadership Charlottesville Alumni Association. On the lighter side, I am a passionate fan of all of the Boston/New England professional sports teams, the UVA Cavaliers and Liverpool Football Club. Lastly, I am a member and active player at the Richmond Volleyball Club.
